Mike Toolan started his broadcasting career at the age of 19 in South Carolina, USA telling the bosses of “Yes 97” that he was a big star on BBC Radio 1 in the UK. Fortunately for him, this was just before the Internet arrived and they had no way of checking his credentials so gave him his first break hosting the Saturday breakfast show.
Moving back to the UK, Mike began working for a wide range of radio stations, including Rock FM, BRMB Birmingham and 95.8 Capital FM, London where he hosted the Early Show and was Chris Tarrant’s whipping boy on the legendary ‘Capital FM Breakfast Show.’
He started at Key103 Manchester in 1998, and has been hosting the prestigious breakfast show slot since 2004. First with “Toolan In The Morning”, then “Mike and Chelsea” and most recently “Gemma, Matt and Mike”.
In that time, under the guise of entertainment, he has given away a divorce on air, organised a mile high club, and locked listeners in coffins for money. Over the years, this type of reckless behaviour has won him a clutch of Sony Awards, New York Radio Festival Awards and Arias.
Far and away his proudest achievement though, will always be the Key103 Cash For Kids Toy Appeal, which has his show as it’s beating heart. It has become the biggest toy appeal in the UK, last year raising over £3 million of toys for kids in Manchester who otherwise wouldn’t be receiving anything. His impassioned zest for charity has led him to be an active patron of several, including Beechwood Cancer Care and The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
In addition to charity events he regularly hosts award ceremonies and company functions across the UK and relishes a live audience. In the last decade, he has been asked to turn on the Manchester Christmas lights a staggering 9 times!
Gemma Atkinson left “Emmerdale” to join the show in 2017 and “Gemma, Matt and Mike” now has the highest audience figures in 2 years. The show’s success lies in it’s warmth, self mockery and the interplay and connection with the good folk of Manchester, who’s incredible spirit is a constant part of the show.
In addition to the breakfast show, Mike also hosts “Mike and Kelly” with Kelly Pegg on a Saturday mid-morning which goes out across all the Bauer big city stations from Birmingham to Scotland.
Mike has been a regular cover for the “The Big Top 40” for commercial radio and “The UK Top 40” on the the BBC World Service.
Amongst his TV credits, Mike has presented on the sofa with Eamon and Ruth on ITV’s “This Morning” and fronted their “Hub” feature and news review. He is no stranger to live television having previously hosted The Channel 5 flagship Saturday Sports show “Turnstyle”, “Live With Gabby” and the Saturday Morning kid’s show “The Mag”.
Mike is the director and founder of Sell Me TV Ltd which devises television formats, most notably “Sell Me The Answer” – a unique game show which was commissioned by Sky One and in numerous other territories around the world including India and Germany. He is currently in talks with ITV over the next concept and in the process of making a YouTube channel.
He is an avid Manchester United fan and has hosted the chat shows “Live From The Red Cafe”, “Thursday Focus” and the documentary “Rio” on MUTV.
At Old Trafford, he has hosted : Ryan Giggs and David Beckham testimonial matches ; The 99 Treble Winning Party live from the Manchester Arena and broadcast on Sky/ITV and numerous Manchester United UNICEF Dinners and Player Of The Year Awards. Sir Alex Ferguson over the years has also called on Mike to host the majority of his charity fundraisers.
Theatre credits include playing Che Guevara to Jane McDonald’s Evita at the Manchester’s Palace Theatre and Prince Charming to Tina O’Brien’s Cinderella and Snow White at the Manchester Opera House.
His voice-over work includes tv commercials for Ariel, Blockbuster and Wrigley’s Extra.
He lives in Timperley, with his 2 children Luca and Lottie.
